The Boston Marathon marks its 129th run through Newton, Massachusetts
The Boston Marathon became my first freelance photo assignment for 2025. I’ve embraced my role as a video journalist, and I admit, it was strange to dust off my Nikon D850 and to call myself a freelance photojournalist again. Anyways, I hope you enjoy reading this story as much as I enjoyed being a part of it.
For years, Maggie Smith Chaviano cheered on Boston Marathon runners from her porch at the 18.5-mile mark in Newton. But this past Monday, on Patriots Day, the roles reversed—her friends and family were the ones cheering her on as she ran past.
The 2025 Boston Marathon will be Chaviano’s second marathon—her first was in Chicago two decades ago. This time, she’s running for Newton Community Pride, a local nonprofit that brings free arts programming to the city. Her husband, Damien Chaviano, has served on Newton Community Pride’s board for five years.
For Maggie, this race carries a deeper meaning than she ever imagined. Just a month ago, she lost her father suddenly. Running had always been their thing—a bond that went beyond words.
“[My dad] was so excited for me,” Maggie told Newton Beacon. “I wish he could be here, but I know he will be. He’ll be the wind at my back.”
On Monday, I joined Maggie and Damien’s community celebration—a vibrant, open-door party buzzing with energy. A live band and DJ kept the soundtrack going while neighborhood kids bounced in the inflatable house, raced bikes, and launched water balloons across the yard.
This marathon was about more than supporting Newton. It was about roots. About standing where you’re loved, surrounded by the people who lift you.
